Results 2024-25

I currently serve as Zone 5 Director and was elected into this position 21 months ago. There were three challenges facing KOA – community engagement, zonal alignment with the national KOA mission, and open and consistent communications.

We hit the ground running by pulling together a team of committed volunteers from each of the seven states in Zone 5 (Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah).

KOA National Camp

In July of 2024, the Zone 5 team, and an incredible team of volunteers from across the zone and especially Colorado, successfully organized the first ever KOA National Camp in Zone 5.

Kashmiri Language Literacy

I believe in the sanctity of preserving our language. In June of 2024, Zone 5 launched the first ever Kashmiri Language Literacy Program which has since been adopted by the KOA Heritage Committee as a national program and continues today.

Kashmiri Cultural Education

Complementary to the Language Literacy class, we engaged a team of volunteers to lead a Kashmiri Cultural Education Initiative with online presentations on topics ranging from Kashmiri Architecture to ancient temples, to the Sharda Lipi, and more.

Engaging visiting or resident Parents and Elders

Zone 5 launched its first ever intergenerational formal Elderly Drive in October 2024, with in-person and virtual gatherings of senior members of our community across the zone, providing them with a voice and a platform to engage in conversations and storytelling about their lives in the Valley, and the culture they were steeped in living in their homeland.

Youth Engagement

I recognize that as we work to preserve our culture, our language, and our community, we are leaving this rich legacy for our children. Engaging our youth in conversations, social gatherings, and in our work is critical.

Engaging our Zonal Community

We organized the first ever annual Zone 5 gathering, which is now attended by community members from across the states, in-person as well as virtually. We have opportunities for social engagement from local and statewide festivals celebrations in each state of Zone 5, to the celebration of our national holidays like the 2024 and 2025 India Independence Day celebrations.

Membership

We have been able to increase the membership of Zone 5 by over 100%. At this time, Zone 5 stands as the largest KOA Zone in the nation.
